What are mixed-breed dogs in the UAE?

Mixed-breed dogs—often lovingly called mutts—are the result of natural mating between dogs of different breeds, typically without selective human intervention. Unlike purebred dogs, which are bred to meet specific appearance and temperament standards, mixed-breeds inherit a diverse blend of traits from their varied ancestry. This makes them wonderfully unique in both personality and appearance.

Here in the UAE, most of the dogs in shelters like Stray Dogs Center are mixed-breeds. Many of them are commonly referred to as Saluki mixes—a nod to one of the most ancient and iconic desert breeds—or affectionately known as desert specials. Many of these dogs have ancestry connected to breeds that were historically adapted to the harsh desert environment.

Desert specials tend to be hardy, intelligent, and loyal. Some carry the slim build and speed of the Saluki, while others may show traits of shepherds, retrievers, or other imported breeds that have intermingled over the years. Their mixed heritage gives them a genetic advantage, often making them more resilient and adaptable than many purebred dogs. They’ve learned to endure the UAE’s challenging climate, and when given the chance, they thrive in loving homes. Whether living in a villa with outdoor space or a city apartment, there’s likely a mixed-breed dog in the UAE that will match any lifestyle.

Understanding the difference: mixed-breed, purebred & hybrid dogs

  • Purebred dogs come from parents of the same breed and are often registered with kennel clubs. They are bred for specific traits like appearance or temperament, but this can also lead to inbreeding and health problems.

  • Hybrid dogs are intentionally bred from two purebred parents of different breeds—like a Maltipoo (Maltese + Poodle). Though trendy, they can face the same genetic issues as purebreds.

  • Mixed-breeds result from natural breeding between different types of dogs, usually without human planning. This natural variety leads to many health and behavioral advantages.

Unfortunately, unethical breeding practices—especially in the wake of increased pet demand—have put many purebred and hybrid dogs at risk. Poor conditions, lack of medical testing, and inbreeding result in higher health risks. Popular breeds like Golden Retrievers, while beloved, are often plagued by issues like hip dysplasia, allergies, and ear infections due to irresponsible breeding.

Why is adopting a mixed-breed dog a smart choice?

1. Better health through genetic diversity

Purebreds descend from a small gene pool, which increases the likelihood of inherited diseases. Mixed-breed dogs benefit from a broader gene base, lowering the risk of conditions like heart disease, back problems, and some cancers. Vets often note that mixed-breeds are generally healthier and more resilient.

2. Longer lifespan

Mixed-breeds live an average of 14 years, compared to around 10 years for many purebreds. Thanks to their robust health, they often enjoy a longer, fuller life—giving you more time with your furry companion.

3. Stronger immune systems

Because of their diverse genetic backgrounds, mixed-breeds often have stronger immune systems and are less prone to common infections. This means fewer vet visits and a healthier, happier life for your dog.

Behavioural benefits of mixed-breed dogs

Balanced temperament

Purebreds are often bred for specific roles—herding, guarding, retrieving—which can lead to extreme or high-energy behavior. Mixed-breed dogs, on the other hand, tend to have a more balanced mix of traits, making them ideal companions for families, children, and other pets.

Unique personality ✨

Every mixed-breed is truly one-of-a-kind, offering unique physical traits and endearing quirks. Adopters often describe the joy of watching their dog’s personality unfold—no two are ever the same.

High adaptability

Because they aren’t bred for a single job or purpose, mixed-breed dogs can adapt more easily to different lifestyles. Whether you live in a Dubai apartment or a villa with outdoor space, there’s likely a mixed-breed that’s just right for your home.

This adaptability is especially valuable in a transient place like the UAE, where living situations can change. The 'desert specials' often adjust beautifully to new routines, spaces, and families.

Adopt a mixed-breed, make a real impact 💛

Choosing to adopt a mixed-breed dog doesn’t just change one life—it changes two: the dog’s and yours. In a world where pet overpopulation remains a serious issue, adoption is a powerful way to take a stand against irresponsible breeding and give a deserving dog a second chance.

At Stray Dogs Center, we care for 1,500 rescue dogs, most of them mixed-breeds—Saluki mixes or desert specials, all kinds of unique combinations. These dogs are beautiful, they are full of love, resilience, and personality, and they’re patiently waiting for someone to see their worth.

When you adopt a mixed-breed from a shelter in the UAE:

  • 🐕 You offer a home to a dog who may have never known comfort or consistency.

  • 💸 You choose a more affordable path than buying from a breeder—often with fewer health complications and lower long-term vet costs.

  • 🌍 You help create space for the next rescue in need and support ethical, humane animal care.

Adoption gives these dogs the chance to experience the safety, love, and stability they deserve—and it brings joy and purpose to the families who welcome them home. 🐾
