Stray Dogs Center is a non-profit organisation dedicated to rescuing, rehabilitating and rehoming homeless dogs in Dubai. We believe that every dog deserves a loving home, and we offer guidance and support to those who choose to adopt a dog from our care. If you are considering adopting a rescue dog, whether in Dubai or internationally, it’s important to understand the commitment involved and what to expect when bringing a dog into your family.

In this guide, we share insights into the adoption process, what life with a rescue dog is like, and how to best help your new dog settle into their forever home. Our goal is to provide you with the information you need to make a well-informed decision, ensuring a smooth transition for both you and your new furry companion.

Why adopt a rescue dog in Dubai? 🐕

Dubai, a city known for its diverse community, also faces the challenge of dogs and other animals being abandoned or neglected by their owners or backyard breeders. These dogs often face difficult circumstances – some are simply thrown out like trash, others surrendered to shelters, and many are in desperate need of a safe and loving environment. By choosing to adopt a dog, you are not only saving a life but also enriching your own life with a loyal and loving companion.

Here are a few reasons to consider adopting a dog in Dubai:

1. You’re giving a dog a second chance

Many rescue dogs have faced hardship — abandonment, neglect, or abuse in the hands of breeders. By adopting, you’re giving them the love, safety, and stability they’ve never known.

2. Rescue dogs are incredibly grateful

There’s something special about the bond with a rescue dog. Once they settle, their loyalty and love run deep. They know you’ve changed their life — and they’ll never forget it.

3. You’re helping more than one dog

When you adopt from a shelter or rescue, you’re not just helping one dog — you're also making space for another one in need. Your adoption supports the rescue’s wider mission of saving lives.

4. You get a wonderful companion

Dogs offer unconditional love, companionship, and endless joy. Whether you want a walking buddy, a sofa snuggler, or a playful spirit in the home, a rescue dog brings heart and personality in spades.

5. It’s a responsible, ethical choice

Adopting a dog rather than buying from breeders or pet shops helps ease overcrowding at our shelter and also puppy farming. It’s a meaningful way to say no to animal exploitation and yes to compassion. It supports the rescue community and gives hope to those still waiting.

The adoption process in Dubai 🐶

Adopting a dog from Stray Dogs Center is a thoughtful and careful process. It requires an understanding of the dog’s needs, as well as the responsibilities involved in providing a forever home. Below is an outline of what to expect:

  1. Application: The first step in the adoption process is to fill out our adoption application, where you’ll be asked about your living situation, lifestyle, and experience with pets. This helps us understand what type of dog might be the best fit for you and your family.

  2. Meeting dogs: After your application is approved, we’ll introduce you to potential dog matches. You can also browse some of our available adult dogs and puppies. You get to meet the dogs in person before making any decisions, ensuring that you feel a connection and that the dog is comfortable with you and your family.

  3. Bringing your dog home: Once you’ve chosen your new family member, we’ll provide guidance on how to help them settle in. It’s important to give your dog time to adjust to their new surroundings, and we’re here to support you every step of the way. You will have a 2 week trial period (1 week for puppies) to make sure both your family and the dog are happy with each other. One of our team members will be your point of contact guiding you with any issues during this time.

  4. Home visit: Before finalising the adoption, we will ask to arrange a home visit (or interview in some cases). This helps us ensure your home is suitable for a dog, and that you’re ready for the responsibility of adoption.

  5. Adoption fee: Our adoption fee is AED 1500 which is required to help cover the costs of vaccinations, veterinary care, and any necessary treatments, food and boarding costs for while the dog was in our care. This fee helps us continue our rescue efforts, providing essential care for other dogs in need.

Our adoption fees help cover the medical care of each dog and many other thins

What to expect when adopting a rescue dog 🐾

Adopting a rescue dog is a rewarding journey, but it’s also one that requires patience, understanding, and a commitment to the dog’s well-being. Here’s what to expect as you welcome your new dog into your home:

1. The adjustment period

It’s normal for your new dog to need some time to adjust to their new environment. This period can vary depending on the dog, but it’s important to be patient and understanding. Some dogs may feel anxious, confused, or scared at first, but with time, they will begin to settle and feel more at ease.

2. Building trust

Building trust with a rescue dog can take time, especially if they have experienced trauma or neglect. Be gentle, consistent, and kind in your approach, and provide positive reinforcement to help your dog feel secure. Your dog may have some fears or uncertainties that you’ll need to address, and it’s important to respect their boundaries as they learn to trust you.

3. Training and boundaries

Establishing a routine and clear boundaries is crucial for your new dog. Consistent training and positive reinforcement are key to helping your dog learn the rules of the house. If your dog has experienced trauma or has specific behavioural challenges, it may be helpful to seek the assistance of a professional dog trainer or behaviourist.

4. Understanding behaviour

Many rescue dogs have a unique history, and their behaviour may reflect this. They may have fears, anxieties, or certain quirks due to their past experiences. It’s important to approach them with patience and understanding, giving them time to adjust and offering reassurance along the way.

The 3-3-3 rule: What to expect in the first 3 months 🕒

One of the most important things to understand when adopting a rescue dog is the adjustment period. Many dogs may need some time to acclimatise to their new surroundings and to you.

IT DOESN'T HAPPEN OVERNIGHT

The 3-3-3 rule is a general guideline to understanding this transition and setting expectations for the first three months after adoption. Every dog is unique and will adjust differently.

WHAT TO EXPECT

In the first days of bringing a dog home, they can be scared and need time to decompress

FIRST 3 DAYS Your dog may feel overwhelmed, confused, and scared. May not want to eat or drink. Shuts down and/or hides under furniture. They will need a quiet, secure space to adjust.

In the first 3 weeks your dog will begin to settle in but may still be anxious

FIRST 1-3 WEEKS During this period, your dog will begin to settle in but may still be anxious. They will start to learn the routine and bond with you.

In 3 months your dog should be comfortable and beginning to trust you, showing their true personality and begin to fully engage with their new family.

FIRST 1-3 MONTHS By now, your dog should be comfortable and beginning to trust you. They will show their true personality and may begin to fully engage with their new family, also setting into a routine.

Remember, the timeline can vary depending on the individual dog. It’s important to be patient and understanding, as some dogs may need more time to adjust than others. The key is to provide them with a calm, consistent, and loving environment during this crucial time.

Special considerations for adopting in Dubai 🏖️

Adopting a dog in Dubai comes with certain considerations, particularly due to the region's climate. Ensuring that your dog stays safe and comfortable is essential, especially during the hotter months.

  1. Managing the heat: Dubai’s scorching summers can be hard on dogs, especially breeds with thicker coats. It’s important to keep your dog cool by limiting outdoor activities during the hottest parts of the day. Make sure the ground/pavement is not too hot for the dogs paws and consider wearing special boots to shield their paws from the heat. Ensure they have access to a cool indoor space and always provide plenty of fresh water.

  2. Dog-friendly areas: There are several dog parks and dog-friendly areas in Dubai, but it’s important to be aware of local rules and regulations regarding pets. Always keep your dog on a lead outside your home and respect the designated areas for dogs.

  3. Hydration: Due to the heat, it’s important to keep your dog hydrated at all times. Carry water with you when walking your dog, and make sure they have access to water throughout the day, especially if you’re spending time outdoors.

  4. Veterinary care and socialisation: Regular veterinary visits and yearly vaccinations are vital to ensure your dog’s health. It’s also important to socialise your dog with other dogs and people gradually, ensuring that the experience is positive for them. Many dog parents take their dogs to daycare for socialisation while they are at work.

Adopting a dog from Dubai to other countries 🌍

For those living outside of UAE, adopting a dog from Dubai is also possible and through our Husky Relocation Initiative it doesn't even get too pricy as there are no relocation fees. This programme focuses on relocating arctic breeds, such as Huskies and Malamutes, to cooler climates where they will be more comfortable with their double coat. Thanks to our amazing husky-loving sponsor, we have successfully facilitated the relocation of numerous dogs to countries like Finland, Ireland, UK and Canada. These relocations are carefully planned to ensure the dogs’ well-being throughout the process, and we support both the dogs and their new families as they make the journey.

How it works:

  1. Application: Interested adopters can apply online to be matched with a dog suitable for their home.

  2. Screening: After receiving an application, we conduct a screening process to ensure the potential adopter is a good fit for the dog. An online video meeting is arranged.

  3. Adoption fee: AED 1000 fee is asked to cover the costs of veterinary care, vaccinations, and is paid directly to the Vet clinic with a secure payment link.

  4. Relocation: Once the adoption is finalised, the dog will fly to their new home country. The relocation process typically takes a few weeks and is carefully managed to ensure the dog’s safety and comfort.
