Giving Huskies a second chance: Global Husky relocation initiative

Our Husky initiative covers all transport fees of a husky being adopted to a cooler country
Our Husky initiative also includes Malamutes and other double-coated arctic dog breeds

Huskies were made for the snow, not the sand.

At Stray Dogs Center, we’ve witnessed this truth firsthand. Based in the UAE, we’re committed to rescuing dogs of all breeds, but time and time again, our hearts break for one breed in particular — the Siberian Husky.

Known for their thick coats, high energy, and striking blue eyes, Huskies are a breed built for cold weather. Sadly, they’ve become increasingly common in hot, desert regions where the climate is completely unsuitable for their needs.

That’s why we’ve launched a new program: The Husky Relocation Initiative. With the incredible support of a generous dog loving sponsor covering all relocation expenses, our goal is simple: to rehome every rescued Husky, Malamute and other arctic breed dog in our care to a country with a cooler climate — a place where they can truly thrive.

Why relocate Huskies?

While all dogs deserve love and care, Huskies have special needs that make them particularly vulnerable in hot climates like the UAE. Bred for snowy environments, their dense double coats and high activity levels put them at risk of overheating, heatstroke, and chronic discomfort when kept in extreme temperatures.

Despite this, Huskies are often purchased as pets in hot climates because of their stunning appearance. Sadly, many new owners are unaware of the challenges involved in caring for this breed — especially in unsuitable weather conditions.

As a result, Huskies are frequently abandoned, surrendered, or rescued in dire conditions.

Relocating Huskies to colder countries isn’t just a kind gesture — it’s a lifesaving mission.

The Husky Relocation Initiative: A lifeline for rescue dogs

Thanks to the compassionate generosity of a longtime supporter, all relocation costs are fully covered. This means we can now send our healthy, fully vaccinated and spayed/neutered Huskies to adoptive families in cooler regions around the world, including:

  • Northern and Central Europe

  • United Kingdom

  • Canada

  • Northern United States

  • Scandinavia

  • Other cold-weather countries

Our goal is to match every Husky with a loving, experienced family who can offer the environment and loving home they deserve.

This is more than just rehoming — it’s about creating forever homes in the right climate, where each Husky can live a full, healthy, and joyful life.

What makes this program unique?

Unlike standard international adoption programs, this initiative removes the financial barrier that often prevents loving families from adopting overseas. Thanks to our generous sponsor for the huskies, we can cover:

  • International flights and transportation

  • Export permits and customs paperwork

  • Veterinary exams and certificates

  • Microchipping and vaccinations

  • Spay/neuter procedures

  • Behavioral evaluations and pre-adoption preparation

In short — adopters only need to provide a safe, loving home. We handle the rest.

Our adoption process: Matching dogs with the right homes

At Stray Dogs Center, we take every adoption seriously. Whether a dog stays local or travels across the world, our priority is the same: finding the best possible match between dog and adopter.

Here’s what our international Husky adoption process includes:

  1. Application Review: All prospective adopters must complete our adoption application that helps us understand their experience, lifestyle, home environment, and expectations.

  2. Interview and Screening: We conduct interviews and home assessments (virtually if needed) to ensure each home is safe, secure, and suitable for a Husky, Malamute or other arctic breed.

  3. Matching the Right Dog: Every Husky has a unique personality. We work closely with adopters to find a dog whose energy level, temperament, and needs are a perfect fit.

  4. Pre-Adoption Guidance: We provide adopters with detailed information about the dog, including photos, video and feedback from foster families or caretakers, transition tips, and breed-specific guidance to ensure a smooth integration.

  5. Follow-up Support: Even after adoption, our team stays in touch. We offer advice, answer questions, and support the long-term success of every adoption.

Why adopt a rescue Husky?

Adopting a rescue Husky is a deeply rewarding experience. Not only do you save a life, but you also welcome a loyal, intelligent, and energetic companion into your family.

Here are just a few reasons to consider adopting from Stray Dogs Center:

1. Ethical pet ownership

By adopting, you're taking a stand against puppy mills and unethical breeders. You're giving a second chance to a dog that truly needs it.

2. Health & safety guaranteed

All of our dogs are:

  • Fully vaccinated

  • Spayed/neutered

  • Microchipped

  • Health-checked by licensed veterinarians

  • Cleared for international travel with passports

3. Behaviour checked and socialized

The Huskies available for international adoption have had their behaviour checked to enter the program. We want to make sure that not a single dog gets returned or has to change homes again in the country where they move to, so we don't offer any dog with known behavioural issues in the program. The huskies are ready to become part of your family from day one.

4. Ongoing support

You’re never alone. Our team is always just a message away with tips, guidance, and encouragement.

Real success stories: From Dubai heat to cooler climates

Betty's journey: From UAE to Finland

Betty-husky was surrendered heavily pregnant and soon gave birth to 8 beautiful puppies

Betty came through our doors surrendered by her owner due to being heavily pregnant. She soon gave birth to 8 beautiful puppies. After being the best mommy and seeing her pups grow and move to homes, she was noticed and offered a home in Finland. Betty was our favourite gal and we were in tears of joy, knowing she had hit the jackpot and would have a wonderful life she deserved. Today, she runs joyfully through the snow-covered fields in Finland with her adoptive family and spends summers roaming in her own island, showered with love!

Zeus' new life in Ireland

Zeus-husky was adopted to Ireland where he gets to experience all things new, including horses!
Zeus-husky exploring all new things in Ireland with his furry brother by his side

Zeus was rescued in terrible condition and it was clear the boy had suffered a lot. Despite his past experieces, he was a lovely, friendly chap who waited ages for his turn. Good things come to those who wait, and so did truly for Zeus too. He was offered a home in Ireland, where he also got a furry brother to keep him company and show him all the wonders of his new home country!

Sisters Harley and Zima got a new life together in Italy

Harley and Zima were left at the vet by their owner who brought them in for a check-up and claimed to have forgotten her wallet in the car, and went off to get it. She never returned. For months we tried to desperately to find a home for the 2 sisters as they were inseparable – all they had was each other. We almost gave up and were about to separate them, when a call came from northern Italy – an adoption offer for both!

Now they are living their best lives at lake Garda and have each other and their lovely hoomans too.

These are just a few examples of what’s possible when the right dog finds the right home — in the right climate.

Are you the right match for a Husky?

Huskies are a wonderful breed, but they’re not for everyone. They require:

  • Plenty of daily exercise

  • Strong leadership and training

  • A secure home and yard (they’re escape artists!)

  • Time and attention

  • Cold-weather compatibility

If you or someone you know lives in a cooler country and has experience with high-energy breeds — adopting a rescue Husky may be a perfect fit.
